A History of Ulster by Jonathon Bardon, 2001, The Blackstaff Press, Belfast. This is an excellent reference. As in any historical treatment, it can be difficult to keep track of all the individuals involved in creating the history. There is a 1992 edition of this book that does not contain the latter years of history.
Historical Fiction
Under the Hawthorn Tree by Marita Conlon-McKenna, 1990, Holiday House, New York. This story of 3 children's struggle to survive the potato famin during the 1840's is written for young adults.
